July 26 -- Last summer legendary superhero creator Stan Lee starred as host of the fun Sci Fi Channel series 'Who Wants to Be a Superhero?' with the goal of seeing if the American public could create the next Hulk, Spider-Man or Silver Surfer. Now the producer is giving 11 more contestants the chance to prove that they've got what it takes to be a real superhero, and star in their own comic penned by Lee himself.
During a recent interview with TV reporters, host Stan Lee reveals the hardest task on the show, his dream super power and the oddest characters that auditioned.
Do any of the wanna-bes really believe they are [superheros]?
Well, if you mean if they believe that they have whatever superpowers they have given themselves, I think in their innermost thoughts and beliefs they know that this is just something they made up. However, as with any mode of entertainment, they've got to go along with it just to keep the show interesting.
Is the world more in need of superheroes today and how you would describe that need?
I would say the world is certainly in need of somebody who could bring all the different sects together and make us all realize that if there is a creator, we were all created by the same one, and I don't think he, she, or it wanted to show any favorites. There's just too much hatred in the world. That's the big problem.
Did you ever get the feeling during the first weeks of that first season that maybe a few of the contestants had never picked up a comic book in their lives?
It doesn't really matter to me if they've read comic books or not to tell the truth. It's just are they enjoying this whole thing about pretending they're superheroes and do they want to go along with it.
Maybe they just thought they looked good in spandex?
Well they just well might. I'm kind of jealous. I'd love to be one of them too.
Do you feel like the second season contestants have more of an idea what they're in for?
I would imagine if they've seen the first show they certainly must have an inkling. But at the same time we're trying to have enough surprises so that having seen the first series won't help them too much.
Is that true that you will be appearing not just on the monitor but in person this season?
Well I think that's a little bit confusing. I am on the monitor of course, but I also will appear as a character in the show very briefly as a surprise.
What was behind the decision to bring on [wrestler] Balls Mahoney from the ECW into the cast as an advisor?
Well it just seemed like a good thing to do. You know, he was colorful and interesting and the one thing you want to do with the show is have colorful, interesting people. That's why they don't show too much of me. I'm just in the monitor.
