How long do you have off before you start rehearsing for the tour?
We get a week. I'm going to sleep and visit my mom in Idaho, and my dad and first studio in Utah, and my second studio and my family there.
You've only been dancing for four years, what would you tell people who see you and are interested in getting started?
You have to work so hard for it. I definitely had a lot of help, and somebody who believed in me. But it is persistence. I was always taking classes. You just have to keep working hard and something good will come out of it if it is what you really want.
Who were you thinking was your toughest competition in the top 20?
I thought in my genre, because of how amazing she is, it would be Jaimie Goodwin. She is just stunning. I met her a year ago and saw her dance. Ever since then, I've looked up to her. She's just perfection. I didn't think she would leave so early. She's an amazing person and an amazing dancer and I just felt lucky to be dancing with her on the same show. She's brilliant. I hate to say that I felt competition towards her, but I felt she was who I raised my standards to.
Has winning the money sunk in? Do you have plans for it?
It hasn't sunk in. I haven't gotten the big check yet. I am hopefully going to be really smart with it. I am taking my family on vacation and then I'll just save it. We're going on tour and then after that I hope to get a job, so I'll probably save it or invest it.
What is your long-term goal?
For right now, the smart way to use this pedestal is to travel and do teaching and shows, but my goal as a dancer is to be in a contemporary ballet company. I have a long way to go and I still have to work really, really hard for that. They are the most amazing people and that's why we don't see them on the show because they all have jobs right now.
I think winning this show might help get your foot in the door.
This might help. [Laughs] But I have to work hard and audition, just like anybody else. But that's what I eventually want to do.
So You Think You Can Dance Pics
You and Dominic seemed to have a good chemistry. Was that flirting?
I think as dancers we all get along because we're always dancing together and with each other. I think in general it is always flirting. Me and Dominic? I don't know what happened, we just got along really well and we never had any hard times between each other.
No love connection though?
[Laughs] No! Dominic did have a girlfriend for most of the time.
We only see like 30 seconds of your rehearsals, how long do you practice?
The first day we get an hour and a half with the choreographer. The next day we get three hours and then the next day we get an hour on stage. By the third day, you know it. It is funny because every Friday I'd walk into the room and go, "I don't know how it is going to happen." It is overwhelming to think that you have to perform that to perfection in like two days. It makes is so rewarding to be, "Wow, I just did that and I had fun."
Not to mention prepping for solos or multiple routines.
Oh my goodness! Once we got to top 10 everything started to get so much harder. At first, it was fun, it wasn't death-defying or anything. The week in the top 10 we had a dance and solo and it was like, "This is so hard, we're not going to live." And we had Wade [Robson] who is ridiculous to work with and will twist your body in ways it has never been before. We couldn't get out of bed that entire week. We were all dying. After that it kept getting harder and this last week was just so hard. I honestly don't know how we all did it and got through it.
What's Mary's scream like in person?
It is so funny! She's so crazy. I don't know where she comes from, but she's really a great person. Her scream is her scream. Nobody else does that and we all wait for it. It's very exciting. You want Mary to scream for you.
