TV Tattler: Celebrity Interviews
'The Closer' Star Kyra Sedgwick Comes Clean
|
June 12 -- Kyra Sedgwick isn't just one tough cookie. She also plays one on TV.
Starring as LAPD's top interrogator Brenda Johnson in 'The Closer,' Sedgwick experiences -- on-screen and on set -- the life of a woman in a man's world. Being a female lead in an otherwise all-male cast might be intimidating to some, but not Sedgwick. "I love it," she says.
In a interview with AOL Television, Sedgwick spills the scoop about how her character earns respect in a male-dominated field, what's in store for season two, her own addiction to sweets and how one workplace fling led to a 17-year marriage.
Kyra, for the uninitiated, tell us what ‘The Closer’ is all about.
Brenda (Johnson) is a trained interrogator from Atlanta. She has been brought to the LAPD as a closer, which means that she is known for being able to bring in confessions that stand up in court. She is a unique character -- flawed, complicated, a woman in a man’s world. She has a big job, and she was brought in at a very high level in her job, and I think that made a lot of people angry. She spent last year trying to win over her squad to her side, which she did toward the end. I think she won them over by being good at her job and also being a decent human being and having a sense of humor.
Is that what drew you to this role, the complexity of Brenda’s character?
Yeah, I think it was sort of there on the page, and I think I brought more complexity and more flaws than were necessary there. But she was a very real person to me on the page, she kind of leapt out and I love playing the character.
You play a strong female in a predominantly male cast. What is that like?
It’s great, I love the guys. They’re really fun to work with and they’re really fine actors. You know, I grew up with brothers so I’m used to being the only girl.
Why do you think the show is a hit? What makes it stand out from other cop shows?
I think it’s about the characters. I think that they are very interesting. I think that she’s a really great character and that she’s so flawed and so real. I think people dig her for that reason. And she’s really great at her job and people like to see her kick butt. They also like to see her be fragile and vulnerable as well. I think you never know quite what to expect from her and I think that’s what people like.
Your character had a relationship with her boss, Pope, and is currently seeing FBI Agent Fritz Howard. Have you ever had a work fling?
Oh sure, well, Kevin (Bacon) was a work fling in a way. We met doing a job and I thought it was just a fling and so did he and it turned out not to be. We did a film together called 'Lemon Sky,' when we first met. It was a play that we made as a film (for PBS).
So what’s your take on workplace romance?
It [worked] for me. I don’t know, if I were a boss, how I’d feel about employees getting involved, because it can get really complicated.
