Are you interested in the Masons?
I am. I'm not interested in being a Mason, but I am interested in their ring, their secret society and god-knows-what goes on there. Who isn't interested in secret societies? There's an air of mystery around the Masons, but the reality is that they're mostly a bunch of veterans getting drunk in a lodge that they've built to look like a temple. It's just a bunch of guys trying to get away from their wives.
Do you think 'Nightline' should hang it up and give you the 11:30PM slot?
Um, no. I won't lie. I'd be delighted to be on at 11:30, but that decision really has nothing to do with me.
How do you feel about the rumor going around that Leno is in talks with ABC to do an 11:30 show?
I've been assured that the rumor is completely false. It's funny how people think things work and there are all these rumors that are spread by people who should know better. The fact is that Jay Leno is under contract to NBC for another, I think, three full years. And you can't negotiate with someone when they're under contract. You can't do it. I remember there was a rumor a couple of years ago that Ellen was going to take over my time slot. I was like, "Ellen's doing a successful show in the afternoon. What would make anything think that the company that produces her show would tell her, "Sure, yeah go ahead and leave us now. We'd love to have you host a show at ABC." It is a shame that people take silliness like that seriously.
In the early days of the show, there was a concern that the show could be cancelled at any moment. Do you feel more secure about how things are going now?
Oh definitely. I feel 1,000 times more secure. Things are going well. And you feel more secure when things are going well. And when they're not, you feel like you're blindfolded with three terrorists behind you.
You have plans to host the game show 'Set For Life' coming up. What went into your decision to make your life even busier?
ABC drove that desire. They needed someone who was going to host the show, and they decided it was going to be me. And they weren't taking no for an answer. After saying no 25 times, I said yes.
Do you think you can do a better job than Howie Mandel?
Um, uh, no.
