Hippies BJ and Tyler Prevail on 'The Amazing Race'
|
May 18 Are hippies cool again?
They might be after free-spirited best friends BJ Averell and Tyler Macniven won the ninth edition of 'The Amazing Race,' along with the $1 million prize.
After traveling through nine countries and across 59,000 miles, the mischievous duo talked with AOL Television Kelly Woo about their favorite countries, their relationships with other racers and eating deep-fried crickets.
What are you guys planning to do with the money?
Tyler: Well, Virgin Galactic is offering tickets to outer space for $200,000. So, that's one place we haven't been.
Well, you've been everywhere else around the world.
Tyler: Yeah, so there's only one frontier left. Outer Space!
What was your favorite location on the Race?
Tyler: The best place was first place. I really loved Oman.
BJ: I liked Australia.
Oman was a great location, plus you made a friend there, the hitchhiker you stopped to pick up.
Tyler: Our friend, wherever you are ... we owe you two Snickers bars.
BJ: He was a good friend, we were all the same age, we all wound up in a car together. Tyler saw him standing on the side of the road with his thumb out, and said "Hey."
Tyler: This man is going to be part of our destiny and he was. The Middle East was great; it's a place that isn't looked on most favorable in American media and we were able to see the beauty of the people and culture and really appreciate that.
So, are you sick of traveling?
BJ: This is just the beginning of our traveling. We're actually planning the BJ and Tyler show right now. Which we can't talk too much about because of confidentiality agreements, but let me just tell you, it involves traveling, beards and babes.
You and the frat boys, Eric and Jeremy, were really competitive. Are you all friends now?
BJ: We were good friends when we weren't racing. While we were in a rest stop at a hotel, we kind of made our own detours and road blocks. We went up to the swimming pool and had races across the pool. But once it got down to it, we knew that there was only going to be one team in first place at the end. Tyler and I had gotten a taste of last, so we knew it was going to be us.
And what about Team Mojo? Did you kiss and make up with them?
Tyler: We didn't make up until after the show, really, because there was not that much time.
BJ: Right after that three-way race to the mat in Darwin [Australia], we had a little pit stop there at that Lake Bennett Wilderness resort and we hung out with them and Eric, Jeremy, Ray and Yolanda, but obviously when we came back to the race, they were definitely looking forward to us having a hard time the next leg since we didn't have any money, or pants, or shoes.
Do you plan to keep in touch with your fellow racers?
Tyler: We have kept in touch with the racers. We plan to keep in touch and by touch ... we mean keep in touch.
BJ: We actually went down and visited Lake and Michelle in Mississippi to watch the episode in Germany with bottle breaking and gnome digging. And then we visited Eric and Jeremy the week after that down in Florida, down in Miami. And Mojo, just last night, invited us to come wake-boarding with them. We're going to go skiing with Fran and Barry.
Tyler: We're going to read books with Dave and Lori.
BJ: Read Harry Potter with Dave and Lori when the new one comes out. And we're probably not going to hang with the amazons [Lisa and Joni].
Tyler: We're going to go shopping with John and Scott, the first ones eliminated. And walk their dogs with them in Boston.
BJ: We're going to go to a tanning salon with Dani and Danielle. We'll get highlights.
Tyler: We're going to run a marathon with Ray and Yolanda. We're going to belly dancing with Wanda and Desiree.
How many languages do you guys know? You were throwing out phrases in almost every country you went to!
BJ: Together we speak 32 languages. Tyler speaks 18 and I speak 14. But just a little bit, in each language. The languages we speak most fluently are English.
Tyler: I speak Japanese and Spanish and English.
BJ: I speak Spanish, German, Latin, Australian.
Tyler: BJ also, speaks the language of love.
