The Newmans and the Abbotts represent Genoa City's upper class. Powerful businessman, Victor Newman, runs Newman Enterprises and has never stopped loving his former flame and wife, Nikki Reed Newman. Jack Abbott and his sister Ashley are closely connected with the Newman family, both personally and professionally. The battle supreme in Genoa City has been going on for years between Katherine Chancellor and Jill Foster Abbott. The Winters family, Williams family and recent newcomers round out the socially and ethnically diverse town. Bill Bell had a successful track record in daytime. Among his achievements was working with Irna Phillips on several soaps and helping Phillips create "Another World." Bell's background primed him perfectly for creating what is now daytime's number one soap. Bell co-created "Y&R" with his wife, Lee Phillip Bell, but their original idea for the show centered on the younger generation. However, instead of "The Innocent Years" hitting the air, "The Young and the Restless" debuted to much acclaim.<#$>Bell took a cue from prime time hits and brought sexuality to daytime. The show's popularity soared. Through the years, Bell has given audiences what they want in a soap opera - interesting characters with longevity, compelling storylines, pacing more true to character's lives and exceptionally high production values.
