The Cosby Show When It's On
Overview: "The Cosby Show" is widely considered to be the most popular sitcom of the 1980's. When it first premiered in 1984, some TV experts had been sounding the death knell of the "situation comedy." However, in the series' first season, it finished an astonishing second place. It remained at the top of the Nielsen chart for nearly its entire run. Its spin-off, "A Different World," lasted a respectable six years.<#$>Bill Cosby created the series, which mirrored many aspects of his real life, with producing partners Ed. Weinberger and Michael Lesson. Unbeknownst to many, Cosby has a Ph.D. in education, and hoped to create a sitcom that would extol the virtues of family values with warmth and humor. Many feel he did, despite criticism of the Huxtables' obvious wealth from some members of the African-American community.<#$>By the end of the '80s, thanks in part to "The Cosby Show," there were more sitcoms on television than at any other time in the medium's history.
