Synopsis

This four-part documentary miniseries charts the dramatic shifts in sexual attitudes and practices, as well as the laws governing them, since the 1950s, when the prevalent attitude heavily frowned on any sex outside of marriage. The turbulent '60s brought in a wave of sexual liberation, which led in turn to the "anything goes" decade of the '70s. The 1980s, however, saw the pendulum swing back to more conservative social attitudes in Ronald Reagan's America, especially as AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases began to take a dreadful toll. By the end of that decade, the Meese Commission would declare a "war on porn," but the country's past days of chaste innocence were irrevocably gone. Among the many public figures sharing their perspectives are musician David Crosby, actresses Cybill Shepherd and Dyan Cannon, writers Erica Jong and Armistead Maupin, publishers Hugh Hefner, Helen Gurley Brown, Gloria Steinem and Larry Flynt, filmmaker John Waters and TV talk show host Phil Donahue.
