Created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, the pilot was called "The Seinfeld Chronicles" and aired on July 5, 1989. "Seinfeld" attracted more of a "cult" audience until it was moved (in 1993) from Wednesdays to Thursdays (following mega-hit "Cheers"). The show then became a staple in NBC's "Must See TV" Thursday night block and a constant winner in the Nielsen ratings.
