Viki Lord Carpenter, the daughter of newspaper tycoon Victor Lord, is the backbone of Llanview, having been through it all, including suffering from multiple personality disorder for 30 years caused by being sexually abused by her father. Various classes and families make up the rest of the backdrop. Previously married to Clint Buchanan, Viki gave birth to Jessica. Clint adopted Kevin and Joey and also fathered Cord with another woman. The Buchanan family is the driving force in town, but other prominent families include the Gannons, the Cramers and the Vegas. ABC was interested in another show for their daytime lineup, so they approached Agnes Nixon, who had the reputation of knowing just how to fix what was broken in regards to soap operas. Nixon had already shelved her idea for "All My Children" when Proctor & Gamble passed on it, so when ABC contacted her, "One Life to Live" was her new creation. Nixon's vision for the show was one that made it a popular soap among younger viewers - a realistic soap opera that dealt with social issues and the characters representing various social classes and religions. In fact, "OLTL" was the first soap to give black characters major storylines. "One Life to Live" alums include Jeff Fahey, Nathan Fillion, Pam Grier, Judith Light, Mario Van Peebles and Yasmine Bleeth.
