"M*A*S*H" centers on members of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War. The series' characters use humor to escape the horror and depression of the situation. Among the 4077's citizens are Capt. Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce, Capt. "Trapper John" McIntire, Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan, Major Frank Burns and Cpl. Walter "Radar" O'Reilly. "M*A*S*H" first aired in 1972 when the United States was in the midst of the Vietnam War.
