History: Judy Sheindlin's career in family court began as a prosecutor in 1972. Ten years later, then-mayor Edward Koch appointed Sheindlin to the bench as a Judge in the Family Court of New York. Aside from hosting her daytime courtroom series, Sheindlin is a best-selling author and an advocate for repairing America's welfare system. She's been profiled on numerous newsmagazine shows, including "60 Minutes," and was a judge for the 1999 Miss America pagaent. She's also been credited for pioneering the "open court policy" -- allowing the public and the media to view proceedings -- seen in many courtrooms across the country today.
