History:
"Guiding Light" got its start as a radio drama in 1937 when Irna Phillips used her own experiences with a pastor who helped her during difficult times as the basis for the show. Phillips referred to the pastor as "the guiding light" and centered the drama on a reverend in a fictional city near Chicago.
