History:
"Guiding Light" got its start as a radio drama in 1937 when Irna Phillips used her own experiences with a pastor who helped her during difficult times as the basis for the show. Phillips referred to the pastor as the guiding light and centered the drama on the reverend in a fictional city near Chicago.<#$>After Proctor & Gamble brought the radio drama to television in a 15-minute format in 1952, it performed quite successfully. The focus of the show switched to the Bauer family and thrived through several changes in writers. The show faltered a bit in the mid-'80s, but in recent years, "Guiding Light" garnered Daytime Emmys for outstanding writing, while stars including Michael Zaslow, Justin Deas, Crystal Chappell and Kim Zimmer have won acting Emmys.<#$>Prominant "Guiding Light" alums include Brittany Snow, Taye Diggs, Calista Flockhart, Cicely Tyson, Kevin Bacon and James Earl Jones
