NEW YORK (Feb. 15) - NBC News is apologizing again - this time for Jane Fonda. The 70-year-old actress used a vulgar slang term on the "Today" show Thursday while talking about the play "The Vagina Monologues." Fonda is appearing in a 10th-anniversary performance and was on "Today" with author Eve Ensler. Watch the Scandalous (and Explicit) Video on TMZ

Fonda told co-host Meredith Vieira that she was asked to perform a monologue with a slang term for vagina as the title - and Fonda used the term itself on the air in explaining why she said "no."

You Can't Do That on Television!

The title bar says "The V-Word," but it was Jane Fonda's c-word usage that has her in hot water following an appearance on 'Today.' Fonda refers to a script she once received with a very graphic title -- which she says on air, leaving host Meredith Vieira stunned. Watch It

Vieira's Apology After Fonda's C-Bomb

"I said, `I don't think so, I've got enough problems,"' Fonda said.

About 10 minutes later, Vieira told viewers that Fonda had used a word from the play that normally isn't used on television.

"It was a slip and obviously she apologizes and so do we," Vieira said. "We would do nothing to offend the audience, so please accept that apology."

"Today" moved quickly to silence the word and cover up Fonda's face with a still photo when the show was aired in the Midwest, Mountain and West Coast feeds.

It's been a month's worth of apologies for NBC News, owned by General Electric Co. MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews said he was sorry for suggesting that the reason Hillary Clinton was a presidential candidate was because of her husband's infidelities. MSNBC correspondent David Shuster was suspended for two weeks for saying the Clintons had "pimped out" daughter Chelsea for presidential campaigning.

Wow, I thought Jane was a born-again believer now!

I get tired of hearing people say its no big deal she used this word on TV and adding they hear even worse daily. Does that mean I have to hear it too just because its no big deal to YOU? Do I have to now worry about my young children being exposed to that kind of language on network TV and not just on cable?

I do not understand people who think there is ANY benefit whatsoever to encouraging, applauding or merely yawning as "no big deal" having a coarser society. The niceties and consideration of others so many of you brush off as "no big deal" are the very things that make living in a society tolerable in the first place. And when they disappear it makes living in a society more intolerable. I guess to those who have never studied what causes societies to breakdown -it really IS no big deal.

Jane spoke the truth during the Vietnam war. We could have easily won that war in just a few weeks, but some folks were making a lot of money manufacturing "tools of the trade". She's not a traitor. The people who kept us there unnecessarily are the traitors.

BIG deal--so she mentioned the c-word---like we don't hear worse daily.

She a TRAITOR!! She went to nam alright and betrayed evenr US veteran she came in contact with to the viet cong. I hope her butt grows together...oh wait I guess it has since she is full of shit!

So what if Jane the ***** Fonda has a foul mouth. I hardly find this news, or interesting. It's right up there with sports "stars" using drugs, you just expect some people to mis-behave and are happy that it's not in your life to deal with.

bill clinton and jane fonda---well at least she went to vietnam

This is just TOO typical. I do not like Fonda at all, but she did nothing here. She stated that she REFUSED to appear as a character in a play where she would have to use the term "c***," because she objects to the term. She made the mistake of saying it instead of spelling it. She realized her mistake and apologized.

The media creates a phony frenzy. Despicable.

If this happened to you or I, we'd lose our jobs. And for us it would matter, since we aren't already multi-millionaires.

Shortnboots............... I agree with you 100%.... Once upon a time you couldn't say vagina without everyone going ape s..t and now you can say that along with many other once forbidden words. I guess this wouldn't be the U.S. if people didn't cry about everything that one says.

rick4646 08:48:12 PM Feb 19 2008

It's no big deal -- People are more worried about someone saying a word on TV when we got a lying, corrupt president sending this country into recession. Even though it is a bad slur, we do have freedom of speech-- and some freedoms is something that our prez has taken from America

Shortnboots 06:54:11 PM Feb 19 2008

Lets move on todays problems and let yesterday go. in another 5 years the C word On TV will be no more than saying good Morning America, you can mark my word on this.

Undrgrndgirl 06:41:17 PM Feb 19 2008

it WASN'T a slur - she was merely saying the TITLE of part of the monologue she is performing...now, if she had called babawawa a c - THEN it would have been a slur...see the difference?
