(March 21) -- It appears that no amount of peanuts can save "Jericho" now.

CBS has nuked the low-rated post-apocalyptic drama for the second -- and presumably final -- time, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Writers' Strike: The Aftermath

  • Writers

    'Lost'
    Returns: Currently on
    Number of Episodes: 10
In addition to the eight episodes already completed, ABC will shoot an additional five to begin airing April 24. No word yet on how many of those will feature Jack's "depression beard."

    ABC

  • Writers

    'Grey's Anatomy'
    Returns: Late April
    Number of Episodes: 4-5
You won't have to wait until fall to see whether Mer and Der get back together; a handful of new installments will air in April/May, before 'Grey's' begins another full 22-episode run this fall.

    ABC

  • Writers

    '24'
    Returns: January 2009
    Number of Episodes: 24 (obviously)
Although eight Season 7 episodes have been shot, Jack Bauer will have to postpone his plans to battle his very-much-alive former CTU pal Tony Almeida until all 24 episodes can air consecutively in 2009.

    Fox

  • Writers

    'Heroes'
    Returns: Fall 2008
    Number of Episodes: 22+
Although the show won't be returning this season, production is set to begin again in April. Season three will likely have more than the traditional 22 episodes and will focus on supervillains gone wild.

    NBC

  • Writers

    'Desperate Housewives'
    Returns: Fall 2008
    Number of Episodes: 4-5
The catty women of Wisteria Lane will return to ooze more desperation in a bunch of new episodes this April/May. ABC has also picked up 'Housewives' for a full 22-episode run to begin this fall.

    ABC

  • Writers

    'The Office'
    Returns: April 10
    Number of Episodes: 6
Michael Scott and co. are punching back in at Dunder Mifflin, which means we'll finally get to see the eagerly anticipated Michael-Jan/Jim-Pam dinner party at Michael's condo. The big question is: Will Hooters cater the affair?

    NBC

  • Writers

    '30 Rock'
    Returns: April 10
    Number of Episodes: 5
Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin (but most likely not Greenzo) are back with hilarious new plotlines that may include a pregnancy scare for Liz Lemon and more 'MILF Island' fun.

    NBC

  • Writers

    'My Name Is Earl'
    Returns: April 3
    Number of Episodes: 9
Having nipped karma in the bud, a newly immoral Earl returns with a one-hour episode on April 3. Look for Alyssa Milano to come onboard in a recurring role as a possible love interest for our karmically challenged antihero.

    NBC

  • Writers

    'Scrubs'
    Returns: April 10
    Number of Episodes: 5-9
It looks like J.D. and the gang will get a proper last hurrah. The medical comedy will close out its seven-year run with five pre-strike episodes and a likely four new post-strike installments.

    NBC

  • Writers

    'Chuck'
    Returns: Fall 2008
    Number of Episodes: 13+
NBC has renewed the frosh action-adventure-comedy-drama for a second season.

    NBC

"Jericho" was originally canceled last year, but was famously renewed for a seven-episode sophomore season when avid fans sent a deluge of peanuts to CBS in an effort to keep the show alive. Their efforts were successful, though it now seems their victory was just a stay of execution.

The second-season finale, which airs Tuesday, will also serve as a series finale, providing an ending that the network hopes will give fans closure. Producers reportedly shot two endings -- a cliffhanger that left the door open for a possible third season and a more conclusive climax in the event of cancellation.

Although "Jericho" could find a second life on cable, the high production costs make that scenario highly unlikely.

I watched Jericho begining to end and loved it. I thought the actors were great and the story line compelling. Its ashame CBS cancelled the show. I remember the show "Cheers" and its low ratings but the show hung in there through threat of cancellation and turned out very successful. I think Seinfeld started out the same way, slow but built up a large veiwing audiance. In a way I think Jericho got an unfair shake and deserves another chance. I can only urge Paramount to look at other avenues to get this show back on the air, you can bet your kids, your dog, or anything else dear to you that I will be watching.

I would also like to add if these reality shows continue to dominate the screen I will quit watching TV altogether!

Jericho is one of the best American shows on, it is too bad that the reality shows are pushing such content out. Kids watch reality shows more than adults so the ratings are not reflective to the buying power that their adverstising dollars would be producing by keeping the show. There needs to be something else besides CSI to get ongoing fans watching CBS. Not sure their reasoning is such a good business deceision and I certainly will miss watching it. They have not given this show any promotion or let it last long enough to judge. Last season was the best yet and the writers are great, so is the cast.

Well, Jericho was the only show I watched on CBS so I guess I can calll it quits with that network altogether. Please let these mundane reality series come to a close soon. They are all sickening and mind-numbing.
