(May 7) - Yep, they did it! If there was any doubt Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon's wedding was the real deal, they answer the question once and for all in this week's issue of
PEOPLE, speaking for the first time about their surprise nuptials – and showing off exclusive photos from their April 30 ceremony.
"We really do share a similar spiritual outlook on life," Mariah Carey tells Elle about husband Nick Cannon, saying they kept their affair under wraps at first. "We really kept the whole relationship aspect of it quiet. Therefore, we didn't really 'date,' you know what I mean? Because that would have been not quiet or private."

"When I was unhappy in a place in my life, I always wanted to be kidnapped," says Carey about her rocky marriage to music mogul Tommy Mottola. "I just wanted a way out, but I didn't have one."
