What Abdul's Gaffe Tells Us About 'Idol'?

LOS ANGELES (April 30) - On Tuesday's episode of 'American Idol', a last-minute procedural change resulted in the judges critiquing contestants' first round of performances instead of waiting until the end of the second round. Paula Abdul gave a negative review of contestant Jason Castro's two songs.

The only problem: Castro had sung only one song.

Paula's Big Blunder

His second performance -- of Neil Diamond's "September Morn" -- was from the "Idol" rehearsal and was scheduled for later during the show. Judges are supposed to base their critiques on how contestants perform during the live telecast, not the rehearsal.

The on-air gaffe has unleashed a tsunami of comments from fans online accusing Abdul of being, at best, unfairly prejudging of Castro and, at worst, part of a competition series where judges' comments are determined in advance.

Abdul explained Tuesday on "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest's morning radio show that she was "confused" and got "lost on (her) notes." But Abdul and "Idol" executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz also agreed that judges typically do not use notes.

"The judges occasionally watch the rehearsals, which they've acknowledged before in various press interviews, as well as on-air during the broadcast," Frot-Coutaz told The Hollywood Reporter. "While this gives them an idea of what the contestants are going to perform that night, it does not influence their comments for the actual broadcast performance. Paula's comments were based on her acknowledgment that she had seen a small portion of the rehearsal. The judges do not use 'rehearsal notes.'

"Besides," she added, "the judges only give opinions. It's America who decides (who is eliminated)."

In a typical year, the headline-making incident might be shrugged off by Fox and "Idol" producers, but this year has not been typical.

The series is down 10% season to date, soundly trouncing every show in its path but showing signs of a ratings decline that began last season. Fox points out rightly that a 10% decline is nothing compared with how far many other broadcast shows have dropped this year.

And after a couple sleepy months of "Idol," the incident is arguably the most interesting event that's happened on the show this season.

"I don't think this will have any long-terms effect on the show," said Rob Yarin, vp programming at Magid Associates. "She seemed legitimately confused. Viewers want the judges to go off the performance viewers can see at home, and what the judges say is important and the rules are important -- but as long as their comments seem natural when the live broadcast is on the air, it's fine."

Regardless of the impact, an "Idol" research study recently came to light that showed producers surveying fans about potential format changes for next season. One question asked fans whether they wanted to see more or less of Seacrest. With the latest Abdul blunder, some now wonder if she will remain on the show as well.

But whether the ratings erosion is a sign of "Idol" weakness or an inevitable marketplace downturn, Frot-Coutaz said the "Idol" judging and host lineup will not change.

Did Paula Say It?

"Simon says that horses should be turned into glue, so I told him I used to eat paste."

  • She said it
  • She didn't

“Simon said because one of them ate pizza and the other ate salad.”

  • She said it
  • She didn't

“If they say, ‘Paula is going crazy,’ the reason is Simon is whispering things in my ear, like, ‘What’s the price of beans?’"

  • She said it
  • She didn't

"I made out with him because he moved me."

  • She said it
  • She didn't

"The moth who finds the melon finds the cornflake always finds the melon and one of you didn’t pick the right fortune.”

  • She said it
  • She didn't

"Sometimes, Randy tells me Janet Jackson likes Thai food and not broccoli, but then broccoli is good for your voice."

  • She said it
  • She didn't

"But you are this handsome, evolved performer. You are American idol, you are. You have a beautiful, beautiful voice."

  • She said it
  • She didn't

"You'll sell out stadiums, because the journey ends and begins in one flash."

  • She said it
  • She didn't

"That's on top of the fact that I have a vagina. Though I do check between my legs to see if something else is sprouting down there.”

  • She said it
  • She didn't

"When you open up your mouth to sing, there’s something very, very soothing about your voice, and it’s like a breath of fresh air, and it’s like, ahh, I love that voice,"

  • She said it
  • She didn't
"We are constantly looking at the show with an eye towards improving the viewing experience," she said. "However, after seven seasons on air as the most popular show on television, one thing is certain: Randy, Paula and Simon are, and will be, our judges, and Ryan is, and will be, our host."

Opps, I meant sung their SONG, see how easily we all make mistakes.

If anyone would have actually been listening to her, then they would have heard her explain her confusion. After they cut away and started the music and all, she tried to explain that the comments she was giving were the comments she had written down about the next contestant in line. It was a song that had already been sung, her notes had just ran together on the paper she was writing on. She explained or tried to, that with them changing things around that she had to jot down her notes quickly. It was a very understandable mistake. It was also a very stupid decision to have the judges give them comments on all the contestants all at the same time instead of immediately after each one had sung their dong.

Oh for goodness sake, this show is so fake and rigged it's not even funny. I remember watching the season with Carrie Underwood. When she tried out, they showed the little bio about her and I knew she was going to win the whole thing. I think they know who the finalists are before they try out, and just let everyone else go in to make fools of themselves.

well this is the deal paula ia soooooooooooooo funny to watch i think she has a sincere heart and is very much worthy of being a judge,,,,,don't be so quick to think she is on something....have you ever heard president bush just talk on his own without a script...he talks in broken sentences to....some people just talk like that...they don't finish one sentence before the thoughts of another interrupt the first...it makes for a messy conversation...i have a sister-in-law who talks like that and she is very straight....i love idol and the judges.... it is perfect and very entertaining....lay off america....be happy for just one moment and enjoy the show...it is a positive force in our oh so negative world.......

Why is Paula still a judge on the show? She has a serious problem of some kind and needs to be replaced.

sugarlane2008 10:57:12 AM May 02 2008

Now I understand why during the on-air performances the judges are quite often laughing, talking, and appear to not be paying attention. They've already seen the rehearsals.

If they watch the rehearsals, do they also offer "opinions" then too?

wrct06705 06:36:28 AM May 02 2008

I love American Idol and I think it's a great show, but the judges are not all that. Abdul is a mediocre singer herself and has no business judging other people. Her critiques lack substance and are usually not based on true musical evaluation. She needs to go. They need to replace her with a musician who has talent and understands music. Overall, they need to have judges who not only have experience as a musician but also have been educated in music (i.e., have a degree in music). None of the judges have any music degrees, and that's plainly stupid. I realize they each have experience in music and the business of music, but how can you judge singing and performance and not have any formal education in music? It does not make sense. I can partly understand why Jackson and Cowell are there (i.e., Jackson has extensive recording experience and Cowell has music business experience), but you need to have at least one person on the judging panel that has been classically trained in singing

David A was my favorite at the beginning, especially when he sang "Imagine." Don't know when it happened, but the more I see/hear David Cook, the more I see him as being this year's Idol. Man, I think that guy can sing anything and it'd sound good.

Oct21961 01:51:14 AM May 02 2008

I think that she was confused...as usual. As far as making the show better, how about we get to hear what the singer actually wants to do...their type of music...their picks...and only every now and then throw them a curve ball and give them something off the wall or out of their comfort zone.
How about having judges that knew what they were talking about? Randy has many times referred to the females and their falsetto....hello?????? only males have a falsetto. If you don't know much about music you shouldn't be judging it. In addition, many times they comment on how pitchy they were when they obviously are hearing something different from what is being televised.
Paula is more worried about all of the contestants liking her instead of giving a true critique.
I will have to say that I believe the judges shouldn't hear the contestants rehearse...it should be that they hear them for the first time during their performance.

SHE ALREADY KNEW WHAT SHE WAS GOING TO SAY BEFORE THE SECOND SONG!

IT'S FAKE AND RIGGED; NOW THE ENTIRE WORLD SAW THE PROOF!

THIS IS NO FAMILY SHOW, WATCHING A LADY HIGH ON DRUGS OR ACTING AS SUCH.
