On the season opener, Mahone takes an interest in Michael's tattoos and buts heads with Bellick about how best to track down the escapees. Meanwhile, Dr. Sara is still comatose back in Chicago. Grey's Anatomy (Returns Thu., Sept. 21, 9PM ET on ABC)

Grey's Anatomy

The 411: Despite leaving the internship program following Denny’s tragic death, Izzie remains a principal cast member in season three. And the legendary Diahann Carroll, the first African-American woman to ever star in a TV series, will join the cast. As for her role? Theories range from an administrative counterpart of Dr. Webber to the mother of Dr. Burke. Plus, folks clamoring for more "McSteamy" will apparently get their wish. Eric Dane, who guest starred as Dr. Mark Sloan in season two, will be returning this fall. Sara Ramirez, who had a recurring role as Dr. Callie Torres, is now a full-time cast member. Chris O'Donnell will return this season too, although it is not clear for how many episodes.

Gilmore Girls (Returns Tue., Sept. 26, 8PM ET on The CW)

Gilmore Girls

The 411: This season will be tough for Luke and Lorelai. Although the two are soul mates, life’s complications may get in the way. Logan will return in 15 of the 22 episodes, at first only being heard over the phone. Rory doesn't take kindly to Lorelai sleeping with Christopher, who will appear in many episodes as the drama unfolds. Kirk returns this season, and Rory will explore college without Logan and crew. But Marty makes a return, as Rory is forced to forge new friendships. Also, Luke will continue to build his relationship with April and continue trying to gain Anna's trust.

Smallville (Returns Thu., Sept. 28, 8PM ET on The CW)

Smallville

The 411: Two DC Comics characters -- Jimmy Olsen and Green Arrow -- will join the cast this season. Olsen, played by Aaron Ashmore, will be introduced as a love interest for Chloe Sullivan. Ashmore said that his character will be close in age to Clark Kent and Lois Lane, unlike the way that character has been depicted in movies and comics. Green Arrow is reportedly introduced during an episode in which Lex throws a charity fundraiser at the mansion with music provided by the All-American Rejects. And this season, don't expect Clark and Lana to be getting back together any time soon.

Veronica Mars (Returns Tue., Oct. 3, 9PM ET on The CW)

Veronica Mars

The 411: Michael Muhney (Sheriff Lamb) will join the cast as a series regular. But Kyle Gallner (Beaver), Teddy Dunn (Duncan) and Tessa Thompson (Jackie) will be leaving. Veronica will be attending Hearst College, and Charisma Carpenter (Kendall) will likely return in a recurring role. Plus, 'Gilmore Girls' star Matt Czuchry will play Charlie Stone, Logan Echolls' half-brother. And this time around, the season is expected to be split up into three separate mysteries rather than one season-long arc.

Meanwhile, Bernard and Charlie try to reestablish leadership at the base camp. But Rose begins to suspect that Charlie is keeping a secret about the hatch.
