TV Observes 9/11 Anniversary
Televised Tributes Include Documentaries, Specials and Miniseries
By Geoff Bennett
As the nation marks the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, television programming airing in conjunction with the observance aims to remind us of the lives lost that day, the heroism exhibited in the face of tragedy and the looming threat that terrorism poses. What follows is a sampling of some of the planned TV coverage.
Building on Ground Zero (Tue., Sept. 5, 8 PM ET on PBS)
Candid interviews with the worlds leading construction and safety experts, investigators and engineers spell out the complex challenges of building tall structures in the wake of Sept. 11. The special takes viewers to two sites that exemplify bold advances in skyscraper safety and construction.
Five Years Later: How Safe Are We? (Wed., Sept. 6, 10PM ET on CBS)
As part of her first duties at CBS, Katie Couric hosts an hourlong prime-time special, which delves into state of the country's homeland security, the threat of future attacks and how Americans are coping five years after the attacks. She'll also pose questions to President Bush as part of a wide-ranging sit-down interview.
On Native Soil (Sun., Sept 10, 6PM ET on Court TV)
Kevin Costner and Hilary Swank narrate this poignant examination of the Sept. 11 attacks and the 9/11 Commission, which was created to investigate the horror and its aftermath. Included are emotional recollections from survivors and relatives of those who died. It highlights the heroism of New York police officers and firefighters and the Bush administration's initial stance against the commission's formation.
Koppel: The Price of Security (Sun., Sept. 10, 8PM ET on Discovery)
Ted Koppel interviews current and former White House staff and military and security experts, exploring the dilemma the government faces in the war on terrorism. The broadcast examines the debate over whether there should be limits on how personal information is used by law enforcement to preempt terrorist attacks. After the broadcast, Koppel will host a live town meeting with Sept. 11 family members, civil libertarians, administration officials and members of Congress.
The Path to 9/11 (Sun. & Mon., Sept. 10 & 11, 8PM ET on ABC )
Harvey Keitel and Mark Whalberg star in this two-part dramatization, based in part on the 9/11 Commission Report, which focuses on efforts to track Islamic terrorists in the wake of the 1993 World Trade Center attack. In Part 1, FBI agents catch one of the bombers, but have trouble convincing higher-ups of the seriousness of the threat as they go after their first big fish: bombing mastermind Ramzi Yousef.
ABC News Live Coverage (Mon., Sept. 11, 7AM ET on ABC)
ABC News, which won the prestigious Peabody Award for its coverage of the Sept. 11 attacks five years ago, will mark the anniversary on each of its shows, including 'Good Morning America,' 'World News With Charles Gibson,' a special edition of 'Primetime' and 'Nightline.' The coverage will include interviews with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, profiles of victims' family members and a status report the countrys preparedness to counter another possible terrorist attack.
