Palmer's wife, Sherry, will stop at nothing to cover up the scandal and clear her husband's road to the White House.

Jack attempts to warn Senator Palmer about the assassination attempt but is captured by the Secret Service, who believe he's a threat to the Senator. No one knows that Jack has become the unwilling pawn of Ira Gaines, who has kidnapped his family and is directing Jack via earpiece.

At CTU, a mole has been uncovered by agents Nina Meyers and Tony Almeida. Jamey Farrell had been feeding information from CTU to those orchestrating the kidnappings and assassination attempt. While detained by her co-workers she commits suicide rather than implicate her bosses, who threatened to kill her young son.

Victor Drazen escapes prison with the help of his two sons, Andre and Alexis. Looking to avenge the death of his wife and daughter, Drazen plans to assassinate Senator Palmer and Agent Jack Bauer.

Andre Drazen has been keeping Teri and Kim Bauer captive and orders them both killed. Teri wrestles the killer, the same man who raped her, for the gun and shoots him, also firing a second shot to make it seem like both she and her daughter are dead. Jack pinpoints their position and rescues his family.

Senator Palmer finally speaks with Jack. He first thinks Jack wants to assassinate him in retaliation for an operation in Kosovo, but the two realize they are both targets. All of the day's events are retaliation for the Victor Drazen mission (AKA Nightfall).

Teri and Kim Bauer stay in a safe house before they are to be debriefed. The house is attacked, but Teri and Kim escape in a car. Unfortunately, Teri gets out of the car, which rolls off a cliff with Kim inside. Teri faints and when she regains consciousness, she has amnesia. Kim survives the accident but is recaptured.

Senator Palmer wins the California primary election. Sherry, worried that David no longer trusts her, commissions campaign staffer Patty Brooks to seduce and spy on him. But when Palmer finds out, he fires Patty and demands a divorce from Sherry.

Nina, who is the real CTU mole, tells Jack that Kim has drowned. Believing her story, Jack drives a van through the entrance of the cargo hold where the Drazens have been hiding, killing everyone. He then shoots a full round of ammo into Victor Drazen.

On the way back to CTU, Jack discovers Nina lied to him about Kim. He reunites with his daughter at CTU. But before he can get to Teri, Nina shoots her in the abdomen. Jack and Kim are safe, Teri and her unborn child are dead and Nina has been arrested.
