'24' Season Five Highlights

In a Los Angeles hotel, former President David Palmer is writing his memoirs when he is assassinated by a gunshot. When CTU investigates, they find footage implicating former agent Jack Bauer. Ex-girlfriend Audrey Raines is shocked, since Jack Bauer is supposedly dead.

After faking his death, Jack Bauer is living as Frank Flynn in the Mojave Desert, where he's lodging with Diane Huxley and her suspicious son Derek. Jack learns of Palmer's death. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, his friends and former colleagues Tony Almeida and Michelle Dessler get caught in a car bomb explosion. Michelle is killed.

Chloe O'Brian goes to work after spending the night with fellow CTU employee Spenser Wolff. Attackers chase her, so she calls Jack for help. She's the final person who knows he's alive. Jack leaves to save Chloe, but Derek follows him. Later, he breaks into the Palmer penthouse to investigate, where he's assisted by Wayne Palmer.

At the presidential retreat, Charles Logan prepares for a treaty signing with Russia. Wife Martha learns of the assassination and says Palmer tried to contact her last night. Logan promises to look into it, but orders aide Walt Cummings to ignore his wife. Meanwhile, Walt is revealed to be a traitor.

After acquiring a name and address from Palmer's files, Jack heads to the airport. When the attack occurs, Derek is taken hostage and Jack must save him from execution. However, the attack is just a cover for terrorists to steal 20 canisters of nerve gas.

When Jack returns to CTU with Henderson in custody, he must face a difficult reunion with daughter Kim. A terrorist uses Lynn's key card to infiltrate the building and unleash nerve gas. At the ranch, the President considers whether to declare martial law.

Jack and Lynn work together to stop the nerve gas, but both Lynn and analyst Edgar Stiles fall victim. And Tony is killed by Henderson, who escapes CTU. Logan institutes martial law and a curfew, while Secret Servive agent Aaron Pierce receives a request for a secret meeting from Wayne Palmer.

After the attack on CTU, Homeland Security, led by Karen Hayes, arrives to take over operations. Jack bargains with a German intelligence agent to question a woman who has information on terrorist mastermind Vladimir Bierko. But instead, the woman names Audrey Raines as a traitor.

Jack interrogates Audrey, who turns out to be innocent. Bierko and his men target a natural gas plant, which they can use to distribute the nerve gas, but the plan fails and he is captured. Audrey is forced to depose Buchanan in order to keep Chloe working for Jack.

Wayne and Pierce flee gunmen who've been sent by Henderson. Jack and Wayne find a recording that implicates President Logan in the terrorist attacks, but both Henderson and Logan are after them. Audrey calls her father, Defense Secretary James Heller, for help.

Logan confesses his role in Palmer's assassination to Martha. Jack stows away on a plane that holds the recording, and must land the plane on a highway when Logan orders it shot down. Martha enlists Mike's help to expose her husband.

Bierko escapes custody and takes his last canister of gas to a submarine. Jack and Henderson must work together to take him down. After averting the last attack, Jack meets with the President to force a confession, but is taken into custody.

Martha purposely picks a fight with the President, while secretly recording their conversation. During his eulogy for Palmer, he's arrested and taken away by authorities.

Jack is released from custody, and shares a tender moment with Audrey. Their reunion is short-lived, however, when the Chinese kidnap and take him to a prison for the accidental killing of their consul in season four.
