Emmys: By the Numbers

With more than 160 programs up for awards this year, the Emmy nominations may seem a little overwhelming. But we've broken everything down by the numbers to help you prepare for Sunday night's telecast. So grab your calculators -- let's do the math.

Emmys: By the Numbers

1

<b><A HREF='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/george-carlin/10949' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>George Carlin</font></a> Noms This Year</b>

Although he died in June, George Carlin's legacy lives on. His final comedy special, <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/george-carlin-its-bad-for-ya/10163497/main' target='_blank'>'It's Bad for Ya!'</a>, earned him a posthumous nom for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. It lost to <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/mr-warmth-the-don-rickles-project/10007015/main' target='_blank'>'Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project'</a> at last Saturday's Creative Arts Emmys, but in our minds Carlin will always be a winner.

<b>Tony-winning Performances Nominated</b>

The Emmys may experience some awards d&#233;j&#224; vu in the Best Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries categories. Two of the nominees -- <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/phylicia-rashad/58856' target='_blank'>Phylicia Rashad</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/audra-mcdonald/215804' target='_blank'>Audra McDonald</a> -- also won Tony awards for their Broadway performances in <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/a-raisin-in-the-sun/10159538/main' target='_blank'>'A Raisin' in the Sun.'</a>

<b>Pairs of Emmy-nominated Co-stars</b>

Competing for an Emmy is hard enough to do on your own, but try doing it against your TV series co-star. <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/damages/1274934/main' target='_blank'>'Damages'</a> stars <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/ted-danson/16938' target='_blank'>Ted Danson</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/zeljko-ivanek/34685' target='_blank'>Zeljko Ivanek</a> will face this dilemma for the first time. Meanwhile, the other 2 nominated co-stars have been through this before: <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/jeremy-piven/57008' target='_blank'>Jeremy Piven</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/kevin-dillon/19208' target='_blank'>Kevin Dillon</a> were both nominated last year (Piven won), while <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/sandra-oh/197286' target='_blank'>Sandra Oh</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/chandra-wilson/298433' target='_blank'>Chandra Wilson</a> have gone head to head for the past 3 years, losing every time.

<b>Hosts Up for Debut Emmy</b>

Emmy hosts <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/tom-bergeron/508984' target='_blank'>Tom Bergeron,</a> <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/heidi-klum/278408' target='_blank'>Heidi Klum,</a> <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/howie-mandel/44979' target='_blank'>Howie Mandel,</a> <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/jeff-probst/242430' target='_blank'>Jeff Probst</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/ryan-seacrest/329869' target='_blank'>Ryan Seacrest</a> will not only be competing for laughs on Sunday. They're also up for the first-ever Emmy for Best Reality Competition Host. This puts them in the same shoes as their contestants, and we'll watch to see if any of them reveal their inner Wendy Pepper or <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/susan-hawk/402334' target='_blank'>Susan Hawk.</a>

7

<b>Acting Nominees From England</b>

It's a mini-British invasion. Seven of the acting nominees this year were born in England, with 6 nominated in the TV movie/miniseries categories. <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/hugh-laurie/40810' target='_blank'>Hugh Laurie</a> is the lone Brit on the TV series side, but with his impeccable American accent, we'd never guess.

<b>Husbands/Wives Who Won Emmys</a>

Married nominees <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/will-arnett/214970' target='_blank'>Will Arnett</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/amy-poehler/273694' target='_blank'>Amy Poehler</a> were hoping to join an illustrious club this year. In the show's 60-year history, 9 husband and wives have won Emmys, including <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/paul-newman/104390' target='_blank'>Paul Newman</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/joanne-woodward/117305' target='_blank'>Joanne Woodward,</a> <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/anne-bancroft/80576' target='_blank'>Anne Bancroft</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/mel-brooks/83158' target='_blank'>Mel Brooks.</a> Arnett lost the Emmy to <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/tim-conway/85761' target='_blank'>Tim Conway</a> last Saturday, but we'll still root for Poehler anyway.

<b>Career Nominations for <A HREF='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/julia-louis-dreyfus/43397' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Julia Louis-Dreyfus</font></a>

Julia Louis-Dreyfus said "Curse this!" when she won her first Emmy for <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/the-new-adventures-of-old-christine/173930/main' target='_blank'>'The New Adventures of Old Christine,'</a> and two Emmy nominations later, she's still going strong. This year she earned a 10th career Emmy nod, making her the only <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/seinfeld/133597/main' target='_blank'>'Seinfeld'</a> alum to have continued success on the small screen well, unless you count those <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/jerry-seinfeld/64376' target='_blank'>Jerry Seinfeld</a> Windows Vista commercials.

<b>New Shows Nominated</b>

One of the biggest complaints about the Emmys is their penchant for awarding the same shows over and over again. This year, they have a number of chances to fix that with 15 new shows nominated in various categories. Newbie shows like <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/damages/1274934/main' target='_blank'>'Damages'</a> enter the competition with seven noms. And with 16, <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/mad-men/1342134/main' target='_blank'>'Mad Men'</a> may give old-timers like <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/boston-legal/219089/main' target='_blank'>'Boston Legal'</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/lost/113094/main' target='_blank'>'Lost</a> something to worry about.

<b><A HREF='http://television.aol.com/show/saturday-night-live/62573/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>'SNL'</font></a> Nominees</b>

<a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/tina-fey/336261' target='_blank'>Tina Fey</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/amy-poehler/273694' target='_blank'>Amy Poehler</a> joined 'SNL' alum <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/mike-myers/51621' target='_blank'>Mike Myers,</a> <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/molly-shannon/64824' target='_blank'>Molly Shannon,</a> <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/eddie-murphy/51440' target='_blank'>Eddie Murphy</a> and others as the latest actors to be nominated for the long-running sketch comedy series. Fey was nominated in the Variety Performance category, as other 'SNL' players have till now -- Poehler was the first 'SNL'-er to be nominated for Supporting Actress in a Comedy.

<b>Nominations for <A HREF='http://television.aol.com/show/30-rock/942767/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>'30 Rock'</font></a></b>

'30 Rock' was the surprise winner at last year's Emmys. But this year, it was no surprise when it scored a record-setting 17 nods -- the most ever for a Comedy Series in a single year. And the show is already lining itself up for more nominations: A List-ers <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/jennifer-aniston/1831' target='_blank'>Jennifer Aniston,</a> <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/blake-lively/407908' target='_blank'>Blake Lively</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/oprah-winfrey/76901' target='_blank'>Oprah Winfrey</a> have booked guest appearances for the upcoming season.

<b>Nominations for Emmy's Biggest Loser</b>

Poor <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/angela-lansbury/40519' target='_blank'>Angela Lansbury.</a> She's 0 for 18 at the Emmys, making her the biggest Emmy loser of all-time. At age 82, time is running out to make up for past mistakes (she lost 12 consecutive times for <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/murder-she-wrote/761685/main' target='_blank'>'Murder, She Wrote'</a>), but at this point, she's at least owed a Lifetime Achievement Award.

<b>Oscar Nominees With Emmy Nods This Year</b>

Whoever said the Emmys are the new Oscars may be on to something. This year, a number of big screen stars are up for awards, including 24 Oscar-nominated actors. Some of the names you may recognize: <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/alec-baldwin/3515' target='_blank'>Alec Baldwin,</a> <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/susan-sarandon/63158' target='_blank'>Susan Sarandon,</a> and two-time Oscar winners <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/sally-field/89714' target='_blank'>Sally Field,</a> <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/dianne-wiest/76163' target='_blank'>Dianne Wiest</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/kevin-spacey/67045' target='_blank'>Kevin Spacey.</a> Suddenly the small screen looks a lot bigger.

<b>Actresses 40-Plus Nominated</b>

Big-screen parts for older women are scarce, but they're flourishing on TV. Thirty of the 41 nominated actresses are over the age of 40 -- that's 73% of the total nominees. The youngest of the group is <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/kristin-chenoweth/290127' target='_blank'>Kristin Chenoweth,</a> who turned 40 this year. The oldest: <a href='http://television.aol.com/celebrity/elaine-stritch/68342' target='_blank'>Elaine Stritch,</a> nominated for <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/30-rock/942767/main' target='_blank'>'30 Rock'</a> at age 82. We knew it: 80 is the new 70.

<b>Years of Emmy</b>

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Emmy awards. Over the past 6 decades, Emmy voters have awarded top honors to some of the most popular shows of all time. Past winners include <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/i-love-lucy/62858/main' target='_blank'>'I Love Lucy,'</a> <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/the-mary-tyler-moore-show/62539/main' target='_blank'>'The Mary Tyler Moore Show,'</a> <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/the-sopranos/255225/main' target='_blank'>'The Sopranos'</a> and <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/lost/113094/main' target='_blank'>'Lost.'</a> And with the amount of high quality shows nominated this year, Emmy is showing no signs of aging.

85

<b>Nominations for HBO</b>

It's not TV. It's Emmy dominance. For the 8th consecutive year, HBO leads the pack with the most nominations of any channel (85). This was accomplished even without Emmy heavy hitter <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/the-sopranos/255225/main' target='_blank'>'The Sopranos,'</a> which ended its six-season run last year. Of course, it helped that HBO aired <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/john-adams/10181428/main' target='_blank'>'John Adams,'</a> which took in the most nominations -- a whopping 23.

<b>Total Nominations for <A HREF='http://television.aol.com/show/er/49782/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>'ER'</font></a>

'ER' landed an additional 2 Emmy noms this year, bringing its grand total to 122 nods in 14 seasons. That's more than any other show in the history of TV. And with its 15th and final season premiering at midseason, 'ER' will have one final shot to raise the bar even higher. Its ratings may be in cardiac arrest, but the Emmys proves that 'ER' is still kicking it.

168

<b>Nominated Programs This Year</b>

Even in the age of TiVo and DVR, it's tough just to keep up with the shows on a single night. But Emmy voters have done their job, nominating a total of 168 programs -- everything from <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/according-to-jim/69857/main' target='_blank'>'According to Jim' </a>to <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/weeds/706490/main' target='_blank'>'Weeds.'</a> As usual, snubs abounded (<a href='http://television.aol.com/show/the-shield/77787/main' target='_blank'>'The Shield!'</a>), but at least <a href='http://television.aol.com/show/the-wire/1130387/main' target='_blank'>'The Wire'</a> made it in this time.
