Emmys in Review: The Good, the Bad and the Dr. Horrible

In his opening song-and-shuffle number, Emmys host Neil Patrick Harris beseeched viewers to "Put down the remote" -- and indeed the three-hour telecast gave folks few reasons to channel-surf. (Watch Neil Patrick Harris' opening number)

In fact, the first 90 minutes or so were positively crackling -- and FUNNY. From Tina Fey noting that this early in the evening, "Everyone is still a winner, and Seth MacFarlane is still just pretty drunk" to Julia Louis-Dreyfus touting this as "the last official year of broadcast TV," to Harris deadpanning after 'The Amazing Race''s umpteenth consecutive win, "Upsets at every turn," it was a thoroughly quotable kudos fest.

All told, Harris as host was spot on, even expertly navigating the sticky wicket of losing out on his own Emmy bid early on in the night -- 'Two and a Half Men''s Jon Cryer instead was named Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy -- yet stopping well short of driving the "woe is me" shtick into the ground, as a lesser comedian might have done.

The 'How I Met Your Mother' funnyman also appeared to find much delight in introducing presenters by way of perhaps their most obscure and/or earliest credits. For example, 'Grey's Anatomy''s Chandra Wilson was touted as "Gloria from the CBS Schoolbreak Special 'Sexual Considerations,'" while Simon Baker was teed up with, "You loved him as Retaux de Vilette in 'The Affair of the Necklace' ..."

Similarly, 'The Daily Show''s John Hodgman aka "PC Guy" from the Mac commercials, delivered a fresh spin on the color commentary, offering arcane -- and even outright false -- facts about the winners as they lumbered on stage.

Harris was so well received that he garnered on-stage props from two past Emmy emcees: 'Survivor''s Jeff Probst, who had the misfortune of partaking in last year's reality-host-apalooza, and 'Daily Show'-man Jon Stewart, who hailed NPH as no less than "tremendous."

Alas, the multitalented host -- even in his multi-hyphenate capacity as a producer of this year's broadcast -- couldn't save Emmy from some missteps. The winners ARE the winners, after all, so no amount of Harris' handiwork could keep viewers from hearing many of the same names read off in the bigger races. (Say what you will about Cryer claiming gold for 'Two and a Half Men,' at least his surprise win made for a "moment.")

Additionally, the idea to segregate the five genres (comedy, reality, movies/miniseries, variety and drama) into distinct segments of awards-giving paved the way for a bubbly start, a glacial center and an ultimately unsurprising finish.

CBS, however, lucked out on two fronts with the movies/miniseries section: One, NBC's coverage of the Giants-Cowboys game was in commercial when those dry and typically ponderous categories arrived; and two, some brilliant soul had the notion to make an appointment with Dr. Horrible -- Harris' Joss Whedon-created viral alter ego -- for a brief bit that interrupted (and thus livened up) the proceedings.

Nathan Fillion joined in the fun, garnering many laughs by reprising his role of Captain Hammer, who comes off as equal parts Troy McClure and J. Peterman.

In the end, did NPH & Co. deliver the best Emmys cast in recent memory?

Sure, the Monday-morning ratings will tell one story. But regardless of those numbers, in comparison to last year's train wreck, as one Barney Stinson would say -- it was a sufficiently awesome night. -- By Matt Mitovich

I missed the opening number which I guess was the highlight of this boring telecast. Neil Patrick Harris did a great job but most of the jokes that presenters delivered fell flat. I also found the set to be way too distracting.

I just get tired of these show they are all patting themselves on the backs for show they do. seems like ever month there is some kind of award for tv and movie stars. Give it up they are all so engrossed in themselves that I only watch the news and reality shows anymore.

I love how Khelama tries to use the race card to explain why the shows she likes didnt win. You obviously didnt learn from Kanye West's mistake. Could it be that the shows that won were the best on?

I love watching the Emmy's but this one was awful. I think all the stars were trying but they were set up by bad joke writing. Even they knew it the way their faces looked while waiting for any laughter that might come. I felt sorry for Neil.

I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and I am not that much of a television person. Host was great - show was funny - well paced. I loved the writers' speeches and all the respect shown for them and their craft by the performers. I might even watch more television. The "In Memoriam" section was beautifully done -- singing was amazing and it made your realize how much entertainment and entertainers are part of people's lives.

As a lyricist/composer, I LOVED the addition of the "Best Music and Lyrics" category. About damn time! :-) Great job, Neil!

I would have preferred Amy Pohler and Tina Fey as co- hosts. NPH kept it going well, but I tired of him by the end of the show. The set was great. The program dipped at the end of the second hour. I noticed NPH was the main producer. Think of all the money he and his lover have!!!

I'm sorry, but this was the worst Emmy show I've ever had trouble sitting thru. Yes, NPH is talented, but the writing, the Directing, the guy talking over the show with mindless blabber.... Intollerable. Who won??

@I am dawn song: I wasn't a fan of his presentation and I, too, am gay. Sometimes people just don't like something - it's not always related to sexual orientation.

Love Neil Patrick Harris! He did a great job. Loved the Dr. Horrible insert....that was brilliant. The format worked for me too....it seemed to flow pretty well. ...didn't lag alot between presenters. I am happy to see hosts like NPH and Hugh Jackman (who won for the Oscars)...they bring a new light to these otherwise boring proceedings. Of course....no one beats Billy Crystal!

NPH did a fantastic job!! Not your usual boring host!! Bring him back...in fact, let him MC all the award shows :-)

one wonders if the people who hated NPH as the host did so because he is openly gay. think about it.

Tom Bergeron is way past do for hosting "Dancing With The Stars" and "Dancing With The Stars" is the best competition reality show. I didn't even know The Amazing Race was still on TV.

You eople just like to complain and criticize. NPH was great. The show moved well and kept me entertained I missed half the Cowboys-Giants game. Do agree it gets monotoneous w the same shows winning most of the awards/ 30 Rock is not that good. NPH is awesome as Barney.
