BIOGRAPHY

Born: 5/28/1906

Holding degrees from both the University of Virginia and the University of Edinburgh, Robert Buckner began his professional writing career at age 20, as London correspondent for the New York World. Before settling in Hollywood in 1937, Buckner was an instructor at the Belgian Military Academy, a magazine editor, playwright (The Primrose Path), and short-story author. Long associated with Warner Bros., he functioned as both a screenwriter (earning an Oscar nomination for Yankee Doodle Dandy) and producer (Gentleman Jim, Mission to Moscow, Confidential Agent, Life with Father). Switching to Universal in 1948, Buckner won a Golden Globe award for Bright Victory (1951), which he wrote and produced. From 1955 to 1958, he kept busy in British-American co-productions. Specializing in Westerns in the twilight of his career, Robert Buckner retired after completing the screenplay for Return of the Gunfighter. - Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
