UCLA's doing something that sure sounds like "selling" ********** home for me because of something that occured this past year in Tampa, FL. I had been on their medical center's liver transplant waiting list for several years after having been accepted into their program in 2005. Last year I was told I was being removed from the list because my blood work had improved to the point that my MELD score was in the safer range - and that was fine with me. Then this year at my 6 mo checkup my MELD score had gone up slightly. The hepatologist I was seeing actually asked me if I wanted to go back on the list, then admitted they wanted to be sure my insurance would still cover the transplant. I said okay and within 24 hours was contacted by the "finance" member of the transplant committee, who demanded that I "prove to her" that I could afford the post-op meds, requesting a fax from my 84 yr old mother confirming she would pay if I could not. When I refused, I was dropped from the program.
