BIOGRAPHY

Born: 5/19/1889

Carey Wilson's long film career began with the Goldwyn company in the late teens. Wilson remained with Goldwyn during its merger with Louis B. Mayer's Metro studios in 1924; his friendship with MGM-executive Irving Thalberg further solidified his position at the studio. A prolific screenwriter, Wilson was one of the many hands who worked on the 1926 epic Ben-Hur, and in 1935 he shared an Academy Award nomination for Mutiny on the Bounty. When MGM formed its short subject unit in 1931, Wilson was one of its most prolific contributors, producing and narrating several one- and two-reel series, including an interesting group of films based on the predictions of Nostradamus. He served as executive producer of the studio's Andy Hardy and Dr. Kildare series, and also produced such gritty film fare as The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946). Carey Wilson's last film effort was the 1957 documentary This Is Russia, which he produced, wrote, and narrated. - Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
